Not in the way you mean ‘Law’. You are asking about Legalism, and behaving Jewishly in the Orthodox manner. You are talking about the Levitical regulations that come with Temple observance when we don’t have a Temple, and don’t live in Israel….or at least, most Messianic Believers of all stripes do not live in Israel, although the population there is growing fast now that the declaration of the Day of Jacob’s Trouble was publically announced by a joint commission of Rabbis in Israel in 2001, and has been re-announced every year since. 1
I am talking about loving G-d and loving one another. There are instructions in the Scriptures about how to do that…613 in the Tanakh, and 1050 in the Brit Chadashah.2
Many of the ‘Commandments’ given by G-d in the Tanakh to Moshe are binding on everyone, because they are about doing Love. Doing love is what we are supposed to be doing. They are not ‘works’, or a set of things to be checked off every day in order to be righteous. Humans are not righteous, and don’t ever become righteous…except in Yeshua, because he gave us the covering of his righteousness. However, after coming to faith in Yeshua, and receiving the Ruach haKodesh, you should WANT to do things that please G-d.
Doing love when you begin your walk with Yeshua is basically obeying the Ten Commandments, and a few other things that fill out the doing of the Ten Commandments, but they are not required for your salvation. However, you will not stay saved if you continue to do what you did before you came to faith in Yeshua, because your actions will grieve the Ruach haKodesh, and he will leave you in your sins. Granted, it takes a lot, as Abba has the habit of giving everyone all the rope they need to hang themselves, but it can happen. All you have to do is walk in the ways of the world, and you will find you have walked away from the narrow path.
Why did you think it was called a narrow path? Most people don’t want to consider G-d’s wishes ahead of their own, and consequently do as they please, assuring and re-assuring themselves that ‘grace’ is enough. Well, grace is enough to get you in the door of the Kingdom of G-d, but as Yeshua said,
Luke 13:22-28 (CJB)
22 Yeshua continued traveling through town after town and village after village, teaching and making his way toward Yerushalayim.
23 Someone asked him, “Are only a few people being saved?”
24 He answered, “Struggle to get in through the narrow door, because — I’m telling you! — many will be demanding to get in and won’t be able to,
25 once the owner of the house has gotten up and shut the door. You will stand outside, knocking at the door and saying, ‘Lord! Open up for us!’ But he will answer, ‘I don’t know you or where you come from!’
26 Then you will say, ‘We ate and drank with you! you taught in our streets!’
27 and he will tell you, ‘I don’t know where you’re from. Get away from me, all you workers of wickedness!’
28 You will cry and grind your teeth when you see Avraham, Yitz’chak, Ya‘akov and all the prophets inside the Kingdom of God, but yourselves thrown outside.
Matthew 7:21-23 (CJB)
21 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord!’ will enter the Kingdom of Heaven, only those who do what my Father in heaven wants.
22 On that Day, many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord! Didn’t we prophesy in your name? Didn’t we expel demons in your name? Didn’t we perform many miracles in your name?’
23 Then I will tell them to their faces, ‘I never knew you! Get away from me, you workers of lawlessness!’
Lawlessness is deliberate disobedience, and deliberate disobedience is what gets people eternally dead. Can you say that Yeshua covers murdering people? Yes, if it was prior to your coming to faith, and repented of, and turned away from. Once repentance is undertaken, you receive grace from G-d, because Yeshua took your death penalty for you. But if you keep on murdering, you will not be under grace anymore, for lawlessness drives the Holy Spirit away.
Think of all the people ‘living in sin’…rather than marrying…are they going to be blessed in the end? No. Yeshua said to the woman caught in adultery,
John 8:3-11 (CJB)
3 The Torah-teachers and the P’rushim brought in a woman who had been caught committing adultery and made her stand in the center of the group.
4 Then they said to him, “Rabbi, this woman was caught in the very act of committing adultery.
5 Now in our Torah, Moshe commanded that such a woman be stoned to death. What do you say about it?”
6 They said this to trap him, so that they might have ground for bringing charges against him; but Yeshua bent down and began writing in the dust with his finger.
7 When they kept questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, “The one of you who is without sin, let him be the first to throw a stone at her.”
8 Then he bent down and wrote in the dust again.
9 On hearing this, they began to leave, one by one, the older ones first, until he was left alone, with the woman still there.
10 Standing up, Yeshua said to her, “Where are they? Has no one condemned you?”
11 She said, “No one, sir.” Yeshua said, “Neither do I condemn you. Now go, and don’t sin any more.”
And it doesn’t matter if it is legal and just ‘fornicating’! Fornicating is one of the few things that Gentiles are forbidden to do, whether it is spiritual fornication (idolatry) or physical fornication. Both are putting your desires above those of G-d…which is idolizing yourself! Grace is not about continuing to sin, and love of G-d is about obedience. If sex is that important, get married…otherwise, just be romantic friends! People have done that for millennia! How else do you show Abba that you care for him and for what he thinks is good? Praising G-d is wonderful, and saying thank you a lot, and blessing Adonai by saying b’rachas is not about anything but staying in touch with our Beloved, and reminding ourselves how blessed we are to be saved from our old way of doing things, and the horrible person that we once were. It is the doing of love that is important to G-d.
How do you know what G-d considers ‘doing love’? Well, he is quite plain about the fact that he wants people to keep to the ‘straight and narrow path’, and stray ‘neither to the right or the left of it’. And that is why there are commandments and instructions all through the Holy Writings. The commandments that one can realistically do, one should do, as quickly as you learn to do them, with the help of the Ruach haKodesh. Books and mentors are terrific, but it is you that has to stand before Yeshua. And if you refuse Yeshua, you still stand before the judgement seat when all the dead are raised that have ever lived once the Millenium that is spoken of by all Believers in YHVH is completed. Then you can tell the Judge that you didn’t need to do anything but suit yourself.
Oh, but what about the Sabbath? That’s a Jewish thing!
No, it’s a G-d thing. So are the feast days…they are all appointments with G-d, on his calendar, to take note of what he wants us to do to be like him, and to express the exact shape of Yeshua’s ministry as he carried out the pantomime of the Feast Days in the flesh. In the beginning, when G-d created this universe, he used up 6 days…very long, long days, I imagine, at least from mankind’s point of view, but until the universe was completed and man was set on the planet, and able to distinguish time passing, no one cared how long a day was. When it got to the 24 hour variety of day, just after G-d created Adam (plural, not singular, as in mankind), he saw that what he had done was good, tov, and he blessed that day, and sanctified it…which means to set it apart as something better than the other 6 days of the week.
Keeping Shabbat, in the instructions G-d gave to the Israelites before he gave the Mosaic Covenant was about resting one day of each seven days. Yes, it certainly separated out those who were following Abba from all the rest of the world who were not, but what’s wrong with that? It’s inconvenient? To whom? Your family, who wants you to do what they do, whatever that is? To your friends, who like to party on Friday nights? To your Church who says that Sunday is the day of rest…because the Catholic Church said so, and people have rationalized that ever since? Shabbat is a gift from G-d, like grace, and hard to keep hold of if you prefer what others say about how you live.
It isn’t that you have to act Jewishly, and light candles, and keep all the legal things that the Rabbinic Jews put together to keep the state of Israel Jewish, even when they were not in Israel. I don’t agree with what the Rabbi’s say I have to do…because I don’t think they had the authority to make those rules mandatory for anyone. They do have the authority that their Jewish Congregants have let them take over the last 2000 years or so, and it is the Congregants that need to review the necessity, and helpfulness of their ‘traditions’. They may want to keep their traditions, but they should study the Five Books of Moshe first, and make sure nothing conflicts with what G-d has commanded.
I go by what the Scriptures say I should do, not what the Rabbi’s say I should do, or Priest, or a Pastor, because adding to the Scriptures is not a lawful thing to do, and telling people that you must do anything that isn’t actually in the Written Torah is against G-d’s rules. But the Rabbi’s do have the right to inform their communities what is a good way to behave in order to stay a cohesive unit, and to stay Jewish, but the Rabbi’s will stand before G-d and have to explain exactly what they taught people to do! I don’t live in Israel, and I don’t live with other Jews of any sect, so the commandments that apply to me are the ones that make sense if I am to obey the ‘Great Commandments’…which is essentially a rephrasing of what we know as the Golden Rule.
Matthew 22:33-40 (CJB)
33 When the crowds heard how he taught, they were astounded;
34 but when the P’rushim learned that he had silenced the Tz’dukim, they got together,
35 and one of them who was a Torah expert asked a sh’eilah to trap him:
36 “Rabbi, which of the mitzvot in the Torah is the most important?”
37 He told him, “‘You are to love Adonai your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.’
38 This is the greatest and most important mitzvah.
39 And a second is similar to it, ‘You are to love your neighbor as yourself.’
40 All of the Torah and the Prophets are dependent on these two mitzvot.”
Yeshua certainly thought that such a minor thing as washing your hands in a ritual manner before eating was not going to defile a person, and he didn’t tell his disciples to do that. He disagreed with the other Pharisees, for he was one himself, on other things as well. It is one thing to strive to make sure you never break any of the commandments so that you can maintain a high level of Levitical purity due to living in Temple times as Jews under the Covenant, and it is quite another to tell beginners from other nations not under the Mosaic Covenant how to be a good Gentile Believer in Yeshua. In my opinion Yeshua did not like what the Pharisee’s were doing because he saw they were laying an unnecessary burden on their own people just so they could feel as if they were doing all that was right and good…in their eyes, and to do what looked good and made them seem especially pious to other people. Yeshua also seemed to think they did not bother to follow the actual Torah, but only their special rules.
Matthew 23:2-10 (KJV)
2 Saying, The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat:
3 All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, that observe and do; but do not ye after their works: for they say, and do not.
4 For they bind heavy burdens and grievous to be borne, and lay them on men’s shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers.
5 But all their works they do for to be seen of men: they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the borders of their garments,
6 And love the uppermost rooms at feasts, and the chief seats in the synagogues,
7 And greetings in the markets, and to be called of men, Rabbi, Rabbi.
8 But be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your Master, even Christ; and all ye are brethren.
9 And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven.
10 Neither be ye called masters: for one is your Master, even Christ.
When an Appointed Judge, Scribe or Rabbi, like the Sanhedrin used to be in when the Temple still stood, sits in Moshe’s seat in the Synagogue it is to read and expound on Scripture, and to judge between men on the breaking of Torah…the written Torah, which was also their civil law, not just their religious law, and customs and traditions did come into it. Abba did tell Moshe how things were to be done in some ways, or Moshe himself decided what would be done in the beginning after he consulted Abba as he molded a multitude of rebellious slaves that did not want to change into the People of Israel, with one set of laws and customs. Thus Yeshua bid the Israelites to obey the Pharisees in what they said to do, but not to copy their behavior, their customs and traditions, as they themselves did not obey all of the written Torah in their effort to look and sound righteous.
Matthew 23:2-3 (KJV)
2 Saying, The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat:
3 All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, that observe and do; but do not ye after their works: for they say, and do not.
Other rules and regulations in the Five Books of Moshe are about how to be SEPARATE…holy, as a separate people within all the other nations of the world. Now, the fact that many of them are archaic Jewish identity markers is suddenly relevant, because Non-Jewish Messianic Believers are being grafted into Israel, and thus, in my opinion, are becoming Jews.
Gentiles may not wish to act Jewishly, or to add on those commandments that we are not instructed in by an Orthodox Messianic Rabbi, like laying Tefillen, or davening, or repeating prayers and B’rachas we don’t understand the use of, and that are not about our ancestors. Adding on a yarmulke, wearing a tallit katan and Tsit Tsit, and also donning a tallit gadol looks very nice and respectful in some ways, and you would be showing off your adherence to Rabbinical ordinances, but if you are not in the process of learning to act and think Jewishly with the help of an Messianic Rabbi, it might be better not to make a fool of yourself, and insult the Jews in your vicinity by playing dress-up.
It is perfectly true, however, that no commandment in the Tanakh is specifically aimed at Gentiles as a matter of necessity to be saved in Yeshua…but there are 1,050 commandments in the New Testament to follow to keep the ‘Royal Law of Love’ as it was termed at one point, which gives us all plenty to do, and still cannot gain us salvation by doing them. Our obedience is done out of love for G-d…even the mitzvot in the Tanakh, where they apply to us. However, the Acts 15 Council listed only a few matters that Believers were to begin with, as began their walk with G-d.
Acts 15:22-29 (CJB)
22 Then the emissaries and the elders, together with the whole Messianic community, decided to select men from among themselves to send to Antioch with Sha’ul and Bar-Nabba. They sent Y’hudah, called Bar-Sabba, and Sila, both leading men among the brothers,
23 with the following letter:From:The emissaries and the elders, your brothers
To:The brothers from among the Gentiles throughout Antioch, Syria and Cilicia: Greetings!
24 We have heard that some people went out from among us without our authorization, and that they have upset you with their talk, unsettling your minds.
25 So we have decided unanimously to select men and send them to you with our dear friends Bar-Nabba and Sha’ul,
26 who have dedicated their lives to upholding the name of our Lord, Yeshua the Messiah.
27 So we have sent Y’hudah and Sila, and they will confirm in person what we are writing.28 For it seemed good to the Ruach HaKodesh and to us not to lay any heavier burden on you than the following requirements:
29 1 to abstain from what has been sacrificed to idols, 2 from blood, 3from things strangled, 4and from fornication. If you keep yourselves from these, you will be doing the right thing. Shalom!
It is such a simple decree that many Christians forget that all of the Gentiles that were ‘beginning to turn to G-d’ were dispensed from the Mosaic Covenant obligations to be circumcised because they were having the Torah itself circumcise their hearts. It wasn’t considered important by the Jerusalem Council and the Ruach haKodesh that Gentiles newly coming to faith take on the burden of the Mosaic Covenant, which was very difficult to do if you were not in proximity to the Temple in Jerusalem. In addition, taking on the Mosaic Covenant after receiving grace through Yeshua is pretty much like throwing his grace back in his teeth, and saying ,”Thank you, but I will be perfectly righteous on my own now.” Consequently, The Jerusalem Coucil, consisting of the original Disciples, headed by Ya’akov the Righteous, Kephas, and Yochonan, had said, as they were deliberating about the matter, just before they wrote the letter to the Asian Churches,
Acts 15:19-21 (CJB)
19 “Therefore, my opinion is that we should not put obstacles in the way of the Goyim who are turning to God.
20 Instead, we should write them a letter telling them to abstain from things polluted by idols, from fornication, from what is strangled and from blood.
21 For from the earliest times, Moshe has had in every city those who proclaim him, with his words being read in the synagogues every Shabbat.”
They were, however, talking about those beginning to turn to YHVH though Yeshua, and how they should sit under the reading of the Torah every Shabbat, and learn all that they should do. They were saying that those G-dfearers who wanted to come unto YHVH should not be prevented, but given a place to begin, and then listen to the Torah being read in the Synagogue, and gradually come closer to their fellow Believers, adding on a commandment here, and a commandment there until there was little difference between them, except perhaps the style in which they were completed. Even then, Sha’ul taught that circumcision itself was unnecessary for salvation, and the Jerusalem Council agreed.
But the reason they even decided on such a limited beginning point for non-Jews was that Peter, and the six brethren he took with him as witnesses, told them about the granting of the Ruach haKodesh to Gentiles in Judea without even being baptized…just because they loved and feared G-d, and listened to the Torah being read in the Synagogue, where they also heard about Yeshua.
Acts 11:4-18 (CJB)
4 In reply, Kefa began explaining in detail what had actually happened:
5 “I was in the city of Yafo, praying; and in a trance I had a vision. I saw something like a large sheet being lowered by its four corners from heaven, and it came down to me.
6 I looked inside and saw four-footed animals, beasts of prey, crawling creatures and wild birds.
7 Then I heard a voice telling me, ‘Get up, Kefa, slaughter and eat!’
8 I said, ‘No, sir! Absolutely not! Nothing unclean or treif has ever entered my mouth!’
9 But the voice spoke again from heaven: ‘Stop treating as unclean what God has made clean.’
10 This happened three times, and then everything was pulled back up into heaven.
11 “At that very moment, three men who had been sent to me from Caesarea arrived at the house where I was staying;
12 and the Spirit told me to have no misgivings about going back with them. These six brothers also came with me, and we went into the man’s house.
13 He told us how he had seen the angel standing in his house and saying, ‘Send to Yafo and bring back Shim‘on, known as Kefa.
14 He has a message for you which will enable you and your whole household to be saved.’
15 “But I had hardly begun speaking when the Ruach HaKodesh fell on them, just as on us at the beginning!
16 And I remembered that the Lord had said, ‘Yochanan used to immerse people in water, but you will be immersed in the Ruach HaKodesh.’
17 Therefore, if God gave them the same gift as he gave us after we had come to put our trust in the Lord Yeshua the Messiah, who was I to stand in God’s way?”
18 On hearing these things, they stopped objecting and began to praise God, saying, “This means that God has enabled the Goyim as well to do t’shuvah and have life!”
G-dfearers of that time could not learn anything about YHVH without attending the readings of the Torah each Shabbat. No one, Jew or Gentile, could have learned to love and fear G-d if they were not listening to the Torah being read…hardly anyone had their own copy of the Tanakh! And the Disciples taught first in every Synagogue in Judea wherever they went, and only afterwards went to the streets and market places, and outside the villages with their message about Yeshua, showing the people where every detail about Yeshua’s first advent was proven in the Torah.
Acts 15:7-18 (CJB)
7 After lengthy debate, Kefa got up and said to them, “Brothers, you yourselves know that a good while back, God chose me from among you to be the one by whose mouth the Goyim should hear the message of the Good News and come to trust.
8 And God, who knows the heart, bore them witness by giving the Ruach HaKodesh to them, just as he did to us;
9 that is, he made no distinction between us and them, but cleansed their heart by trust.
10 So why are you putting God to the test now by placing a yoke on the neck of the talmidim which neither our fathers nor we have had the strength to bear?
11 No, it is through the love and kindness of the Lord Yeshua that we trust and are delivered — and it’s the same with them.”
12 Then the whole assembly kept still as they listened to Bar-Nabba and Sha’ul tell what signs and miracles God had done through them among the Gentiles.
13 Ya‘akov broke the silence to reply. “Brothers,” he said, “hear what I have to say.
14 Shim‘on has told in detail what God did when he first began to show his concern for taking from among the Goyim a people to bear his name.
15 And the words of the Prophets are in complete harmony with this for it is written,
16 ‘“After this, I will return; and I will rebuild the fallen tent of David. I will rebuild its ruins, I will restore it,
17 so that the rest of mankind may seek the Lord, that is, all the Goyim who have been called by my name,”
18 says Adonai, who is doing these things.’ All this has been known for ages.
So, it is obvious that listening to the Torah is important, and although the internet is great, a real Messianic Rabbi in a Synagogue is what I would like most, and what all of us should seek, where possible. Whether you are likely to go to a Synagogue depends on whether one is nearby you that is Messianic and thus allows questions about Yeshua.
Orthodox, Conservative, Reform and Karaite Synagogues will think you insulting and rude in the extreme, and missionizing if you come to them about Yeshua, because they refuse to consider him as Mashiach…at least for now.
So all Believers in Yeshua must walk in love, and the more you learn about the Torah, and how it influenced the civilization that has grown up around it, and also read the Brit Chadahshah, the more you need to begin thinking about, “What can I do that I am not doing to walk the narrow path, and to show love to G-d and to my brothers in Yeshua. I have appended the list of the 1050 commandments in the New Testament for you to begin considering, and also set them separately as their own post for easy access.
Read all of the Bible, and consider what is most important to do first, and when you have learned to do those first things well, add on more acts of obedience, more acts that show your love for G-d, for Yeshua, and for your neighbors.
